3-10 Day
Expeditions
Do you have the adventurous spirit of an explorer? If so, you
can choose
one of our expeditions to the largest open roof
rock-art gallery in the World: the Sierra de San Francisco.
All our expeditions are fully guided and include
transportation from San Ignacio and back, all camping gear,
all full meals and riding and pack animals, unless arranged
otherwise. Good health and physical condition are required to
participate in any of these expeditions.
Santa Teresa Canyon
(3-4 days)
We'll drive from San Ignacio
to San Francisco de la Sierra, a ranch over 1000 meters above
the sea level, where our local ranchero guides will saddle
mules for us and load the pack burros (donkeys)
before starting our exciting ride or hike down the Santa
Teresa Canyon. After several hours enjoying the exhilarating
scenery and the incredibly changing vegetation and wildlife,
we will reach the Arroyo San Pablo. Shortly after, we will
find El Cacarizo, our designated camping site where, after a
rewarding dinner prepared by our guides, we'll enjoy our first
night in the canyon and rest asleep under the most amazingly
stared ceiling you have ever seen.
Next day, we will start our
one- or two-day artful journey through 6 archeological sites
levels I and II, including the world-famous Cueva Pintada, with more then a
hundred meters of up to 5 meters high rock-art motifs more than 7000
years old. Big horn sheep, deer, sea lions, fish, humans and many other figures depicted in the
mystic murals of La Soledad, Las Flechas, Los Músicos and
Boca de San Julio will give fly to your imagination into
thousand conjuctures about the existence of their ancient
painters.
In our last day, shortly after breakfast or after visiting
whatever cave we have left to see, we'll start our mule ride
or hike back up to Guadalupe and San Francisco de la Sierra.

Arroyo del Parral (3-4 days)
We will drive you from San
Ignacio to Santa Marta, where this expedition begins. From
there, we'll take a long hike or ride through the mountain range
and across several plateaus until arriving at the Arroyo del
Parral bed. In this expedition we will visit spectacular caves
levels I and II, such as La Serpiente, El Mono Alto, La Super Nova or La Clarita
y los Corralitos.
Santa Marta-San Francisco de la Sierra
Rock Art Circuit (6 to
10 days)
We will drive from San Ignacio to Rancho Santa Marta to
meet our local ranchero guides and riding and pack animals.
From there, we will depart to the most complete cave painting
expedition through this unique outdoor art gallery, UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage
site.
We'll cross most of this impressive mountain range, passing through
plateaus so high that we can enjoy a unique view: watch the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez from the same
spot.
In the very heart of El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, we
will visit a total of 10 rock art sites levels I, II and III, including
famous La Pintada
and the rarely visited caves of San Gregorio and San
Gregorito. Set amidst an isolated scenery incredibly
landscaped by generations of laborious Sudcalifornian
rancheros, we will visit Rancho San Gregorio. In this man-made
orchard paradise in the middle of the desert we will
share the peculiar lifestyle of its inhabitants. Check the price
and the details we have included for you to fully enjoy this
amazing expedition*.
*Though
INAH permits for visiting the caves, we require a copy of your ID to get yours from
Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History. The
visit to caves level III
require a permit that must be applied for at least 6
months prior to the arrival date.
