The term ecotourism began to be used about twenty years ago,
but only recently has it started to represent a viable
option for the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage
of villages, while simultaneously promoting the notion of
sustainable economic development.
In 1983, author and architect Ceballos Lascurain defined
ecotourism (or ecological tourism) as a type of responsible
tourism.
How is ecotourism practiced?
Ecotourism consists of traveling through natural areas
without disturbing them, to enjoy, appreciate and study both
their natural attractions (landscapes, flora and wild fauna)
as well as any cultural manifestations that may be found there.
