Frequently Asked Questions

About Gray Whale Watching

Our official season runs from December 15 to April 30. However, based on recent whale behavior, our regular operations typically begin around January 20 and end around the second week of April. These dates may vary slightly each season depending on natural conditions.

It depends on what you’d like to experience. Late January is especially exciting as it marks the arrival of the first whales and the appearance of newborn calves. February through mid-March is a high-activity period, when courtship and mating behaviors are more visible, and whale numbers peak in the lagoon. Toward the end of the season—from mid-March to early or mid-April—most of the whales remaining are mothers with calves preparing for their northward migration.

No. These interactions are entirely natural, unique, and spontaneous—the whales decide if, when, and how they approach us. While sightings are highly likely during our operating season, this is a wildlife experience in a natural environment, and there are no absolute guarantees. Still, simply being in the presence of these magnificent animals is a deeply moving experience. Laguna San Ignacio offers much more than sightings—it’s a place of energy and beauty that leaves a lasting impression.

Our boats are approximately 7 meters (23 feet) long and hold up to 12 passengers, plus a guide and boat operator. This ensures a safe, comfortable, and respectful experience with the whales. Please note that unless you’ve reserved a private boat, you’ll likely share the ride with guests from other groups.

Yes, babies and older adults are welcome. Babies may join under the full responsibility of their parents or guardians. There’s no age limit for seniors as long as they can safely board and disembark the boat and handle any motion during the tour. If you or someone in your group has limited mobility, please contact us in advance—we may be able to accommodate your needs with proper notice.

Yes. All our tours are led by trained boat guides, life jackets are mandatory, and we strictly follow regulations for whale watching. We also carry liability insurance and all boats meet the safety certifications issued by the relevant authorities.

Safety is always our top priority. Boat trips are suspended when wind speeds exceed 30 km/h or visibility is poor, as mandated by environmental authorities. Weather at the lagoon can shift throughout the day, so with a bit of patience, we can often run tours earlier or later the same day. If conditions prevent us from going out, we’ll offer to reschedule your tour or provide an alternative. If rescheduling isn’t possible, our weather-related refund policy will apply. We recommend staying in touch with our reservations team, who will keep you informed about any changes.

Note: Weather apps can be helpful, but they often don’t reflect the local conditions at the lagoon. For the most accurate updates, rely on our team.

Weather and Recommendations

It can vary throughout the day—mornings may start off cold and cloudy, followed by sun and warmth mid-day, and wind may pick up again later. January tends to be cooler, though rarely extreme. We recommend bringing thermal layers, waterproof clothing, and a warm hat or scarf.

  1. We suggest packing:
  • Warm clothing in layers
  • Hat/cap and sunglasses
  • Biodegradable sunscreen
  • Closed-toe comfortable shoes
  • Water shoes or sandals for wet areas
  • Flashlight and power bank
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Camera or binoculars (optional)
